Ärende: [RHSA-2002:228-11] Updated Net-SNMP packages fix security and other bugs
------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat Security Advisory

Synopsis: Updated Net-SNMP packages fix security and other bugs
Advisory ID: RHSA-2002:228-11
Issue date: 2002-10-09
Updated on: 2002-12-17
Product: Red Hat Linux
Keywords: ucd-snmp flaw:design
Cross references:
Obsoletes:
CVE Names: CAN-2002-1170
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Topic:

The Net-SNMP packages shipped with Red Hat Linux 8.0 contain several
bugs including a remote denial of service vulnerability. This errata
release corrects those problems.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Linux 8.0 - i386

3. Problem description:

The Net-SNMP project includes various Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) tools.

The SNMP daemon included in the Net-SNMP package versions 5.0.1
through 5.0.4 can be caused to crash if it is sent a specially
crafted packet. Successful exploitation of this issue would require
knowledge of a known SNMP community string.

Red Hat Linux 8.0 shipped with Net-SNMP 5.0.1 and is therefore
vulnerable to this issue. Users of Net-SNMP should upgrade to these
errata packages containing Net-SNMP 5.0.6 which is not vulnerable to
this issue. In addition, Net-SNMP 5.0.6 fixes a number of other
minor bugs.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only
those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs
which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated.
Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current
directory *only* contains the desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network.
Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat
Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the
appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system.

5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla for more info):

75433 - Milan 8.0 net-snmp daemon dies when stressing it with gets
and getnexts 78960 - Remote Denial of Service with Net-SNMP
