CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

PACKAGE : sendmail
SUMMARY : Sendmail local root vulnerability
DATE : 2001-08-23 11:30:00
ID : CLA-2001:412
RELEVANT
RELEASES : 6.0, 7.0

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION
Sendmail is a largely used Mail Transfer Agent (MTA).
Versions between (and including) 8.10.0 and 8.11.5 and some 8.12 beta
versions have a local vulnerability that allows a local attacker to
 obtain root privileges.
Cade Cairns from Security Focus discovered an input validation error
in sendmail's debugging functionality. The function that handles the
"-d" command line option uses a signed integer for that value and
uses it as an index to an internal vector. This function does not
check for negative values of this index, which allows a local
attacker to cause a signed integer overflow by supplying large
numbers to this parameter which can be used to write data outside
 that vector.
Exploits for this vulnerability have already been published.

SOLUTION
Sendmail authors released version 8.11.6 to fix this problem. All
 sendmail users must upgrade immediately.
Please note that this package already restarts the sendmail service
 if it's already running.

Some users have reported that it might be necessary to rebuild the
hash files in /etc/mail. For example, to rebuild the virtusertable
 file, execute:
 # cd /etc/mail
 # makemap hash virtusertable.db < virtusertable

To rebuild the alias file, execute:
 # newaliases

Starting with version 7.0 of Conectiva Linux, sendmail is no longer
the default MTA of the distribution.
